In tragic news, a two-year-old girl and her 37-year old mother succumbed to injuries sustained during a car ramming attack in Munich on Thursday which injured at least 39 people, German police said on Saturday.
An Afghan national was arrested by German authorities on suspicion of deliberately driving the car into a crowd of trade unions on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, we have to confirm the deaths today of the two-year-old child and her 37-year-old mother,” a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by AFP.
According to prosecutors, at least 39 people were injured and some of them in critical condition, when the car hit trade union activists demonstrating for higher pay.
The 24-year-old attacker, identified by German media as Farhad N, is an asylum seeker and the police added that he may have had motives of Islamist extremism behind the ghastly attack on the crowd.
According to prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann, the alleged attacker uttered the words “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) to police officers and even offered prayers after carrying out the incident.
German authorities have stated that they are considering the attack as a religiously motivated attack without providing further details. The attack remains significant in bringing the security concerns in Germany to the forefront as the country is heading towards federal election on February 23.
