New Con Ed rates could see triple digit bill increase, according to report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A prospective Con Edison rate increase could see a triple digit increase on monthly bills, according to a new report from the New York Post.

The rate hike, which still exists only as a proposal, could see average energy and gas bills increase by over $150 a month, the Post reports.

The energy company will have to get approval from the New York state government‘s Public Service Commission to actually increase electricity bills by around 11% and gas bills by about 13%.

Should this be approved, the increase would go into effect at the beginning of 2026.

Part of the money raised by the rate hike would go to shore up the company’s existing infrastructure to deal with the increasing number of storms and severe heat waves, Gothamist reports.

While Con Edison doesn’t generate its own power and cannot control energy costs, it does control the cost of delivery rates.

These rate increases can lead to a serious jump in bills, leading some to look for energy alternatives, including one New Springville couple who’s now suing their solar panel company for false promises and misrepresentation of costs.

Over the course of multiple meetings in 2022 with a sales rep from Sunco at their home, the couple allege they were told that solar panels would essentially “eliminate” their Con Edison bill.

Other lawsuits, meanwhile, have been filed against the same company in the New York City area, including one in Brooklyn federal court taken on by the Legal Aid Society.

In Brooklyn federal court, a lawsuit filed in September by the Legal Aid Society alleges Sunco used deceptive business practices, including misleading advertising, misrepresentations of costs and fraud.
