“I could hear screaming, next minute, all hell broke loose. There was choppers in the air. The ambos (ambulances) and the police were running. And it was just… I just couldn’t believe it. One of the ladies that was down here comforting one of the locals. I’ve been here ten years, this has never happened and it’s going to devastate the community.”

Emergency crews were called to the Woorim Beach at Bribie Island, about 50 miles north of Brisbane around 5 p.m. (0600 GMT) on Monday (February 3) following reports of a serious shark bite incident, Queensland state police said on Monday.

“The female was swimming when she was bitten by a shark … the female sustained life-threatening injuries and succumbed to those injuries,” a police spokesperson said in an email.
