According to Kroger’s website, McMullen started working for Kroger in 1978 as a part-time stock clerk in Lexington, Kentucky. During his career, he has held numerous leadership positions, including assistant treasurer, vice president of Planning and Capital Management, corporate controller, chief financial officer, senior vice president, executive vice president and vice chairman.

He was elected to the company’s board of directors in 2003. He then transitioned to president and chief operating officer in 2009. McMullen was appointed chief executive officer in 2014 and was named chairman of the board in 2015.

He is also on the Board of Directors for Cincinnati Financial Corporation, Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC), Cincinnati Business Committee and Consumer Goods Forum. He also serves on the Xavier University board of trustees and the dean’s advisory council for the UK Gatton College of Business and Economics.
