One dead in suspected terrorism attack in France

Paris: A knife attack in eastern France has left one man dead and at least two other people wounded in violence President Emmanuel Macron labelled as Islamic extremism.

A 37-year-old Algerian man was arrested after the attack in Mulhouse, near the border with Germany and Switzerland. The BBC and London Telegraph reported that the suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is great”.

The man had been flagged on a radicalism watch list, a local prosecutor said.

The attack happened near a covered canal-side market, during a demonstration in support of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which police were patrolling.

A 69-year-old Portuguese man was killed, the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said, while two officers were wounded.

Macron said there was “no doubt it was an Islamist terrorist attack”.

The French anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said that it’s handling the investigation. France has been on high alert for extremist threats. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was heading to the scene of the attack on Saturday night.

“Horror has seized our city,” Mulhouse mayor Michele Lutz said on Facebook.
